Child Garden

Merriam Websters provides the etymology for the word 'Kindergarten": German, from Kinder children + Garten garden. Normally, I wouldn't care, but since today was Cassie's first day of school, it's been a pretty amazing morning.

Cassie started today with at Dorsey Elementary School in Rowlett. She was so excited this morning that she got up great at 6:40AM. When we dropped her off, you could tell she was a little nervous, but also very excited. She hung up her school bag and lunch box, put on her ID lanyard, hugged her brother and sister, and sat at a desk. Mom was about to cry, but everyone else handled it very well.

I don't remember my first day of school, but I am finding it very hard to comprehend that my baby is grown up enough to already be attending elementary school. I'm sure it will just be a flash where she's graduating high school and looking for colleges.

Marissa also started Junior High today, and was more nervious that Cassie. Clearly, she has more social pressures that Cassie does - but thankfully she has friends and a big brother to help her acclimate. Next year, the girls will be old pros and Dylan will start high school.

The kids were kind enough to let me take a picture of them - below it is the picture from MY first day of kindergarten with my sister, Michele and my brother, Marc (from 1974).

The kids dress much more hip than we did.

Well thanks alot for posting that pic....arent I just the vision of style. Well actually we were very IN style back then. Fortunately for you and me, Marc is the only one going bowling. Too funny- bowling bag school bag....Well it is pretty amazing that Cassie is in school now. Look how fast time goes by, I remember Pauls' first day of school like it was yesterday, and it was only 21 yrs ago. I am sure Cassie will be the star of the class ( she is alot like her dad ) and Marissa will be so popular it will drive you crazy. Good thing boys are actually easier. Dylan is such a cool kid I am sure he will be fine next yr as well. Hugs and kisses to everyone. Enjoy the next couple weeks, cause from what I hear- the entire household will be in one school or another!! Be good, learn something new everyday and HAVE FUN!! Love you all

I think those pants are coming back in style. Not sure about the glasses though . . .

Time passes so quickly!

You are all a rough crowd! :)

I just want you all to know that you have reopened a wound I though long healed. Those glasses were the bane of my existance. I hope you are all happy. LOL

Lastly, as April noted, I saw a kid wearing those pants as shorts yesterday. He'll get the same kind of beating 30 years from now when they look at the pictures.

Kel - I hope your day was a trauma free as ours.

I love reading your blog, Scott, makes me feel that you and the family are much closer to "home" than you actually are. Gals started pre-K Wednesday; I sent them and JP to the wrong corner and they missed their very first bus LOL! We got it squared away by the afternoon ride home thank goodness, gals loved their first day hope Cass did too. Nice pic, btw! love from one of your NY cuz's (the important one LOL)!! LET'S GO METS!!!

Thanks, Jill. I like keeping the blog and knowing that family and friends enjoy it. In fact, it is really cool to go back and reread old posts. I do that on occasion and it is interesting to see what I was doing or thinking.

I hope the kids enjoy pre-K. It is fun watching them learn. We are trying to keep Cassie excited by making a huge deal over everything she brings home.

She is already complaining of boredom. Apparently, she is a little ahead of many of the others, so while they practice writing their names, she is not entertained.

I guess it's a good problem to have.

I too, would much rather see my kids ahead of their classmates than behind, but too far ahead breeds boredom and that can lead to different kinds of trouble....hopefully once the other kids (ya know, the ones whose parents did not take the time to teach them!) in Cassie's class learn to write their names they will move on to more interesting work. xo Jill
